PHILADELPHIA Bryce Harper carefully examined the items laid out in front of him: the cap, the jersey, the mix of midnight blue, light blue https://www.philliesplayerfanstore.com/weston_wilson_jersey-250, and yellow. The "PHILLY" text on the front of the jersey, the Liberty Bell, the skyline, and yellow stars on the cap, along with the subtle Easter eggs woven into the design.
A year ago, Phillies executives invited Harper to give his opinion on the Nike City Connect uniforms set for the 2024 season. Theyd spent years perfecting the design, and they wanted to know what he thought. As the face of the team, Harpers opinion carried weight.
When Harper first looked at the cap and jersey in executive vice president Dave Bucks office at BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater, Fla., he didnt immediately speak up. The silence stretched on for what felt like an eternity.
Well? the executives asked.
Theyre dope, Harper finally said.
The Phillies revealed their City Connect uniforms on Friday morning at Citizens Bank Park, announcing that they would wear them every Friday at home starting on April 12.
These new uniforms mark a significant departure from anything the Phillies have done before, which was exactly the intention. This is why it took Harper a moment to process what he was seeing in Clearwater.
When I first saw them, I definitely didnt expect this, Harper shared. I didnt think of blue and yellow. I had red or green for the Phanatic, maybe even black, in my mind before seeing this. But once I saw the design and learned the story behind it, I thought it was awesome. Its completely unexpected, but it all comes together so wellthe look, the story, everything.
Nike asked the Phillies to trust the process, but it also sought their input. They wanted to know what Philly means to them and what they liked and disliked about the city. From these conversations, Nike designed a uniform that draws inspiration from the Philadelphia city flag, which features light blue and yellow.
We wanted to think outside the box while still honoring the city, said Phillies vice president of business affairs Howard Smith. The design is rooted in the city flag, and once people know the story behind it, theyll see the connection.
The Phillies cap and helmet are midnight blue, with the helmet sporting a matte finish that players specifically requested and now love. The Liberty Bell logo on both the cap and helmet features two yellow stars, with a skyline in midnight blue and a light blue sky inside the bell.
"We liked the idea of playing off our original logo, " said Phillies retail marketing director Kristin Zeller.
The jersey features a gradient from light blue to midnight blue and prominently displays PHILLY on the front. The font used is unique, created by Nike specifically for the Phillies. Subtle markings inside the letters represent the cracks in the Liberty Bell, with 13 cracks symbolizing the original 13 colonies.
The jersey also features yellow lettering and numbers on the back https://www.philliesplayerfanstore.com/max_kepler_jersey-281, with midnight blue pants and yellow piping. The socks showcase a city skyline design, transitioning from light blue to midnight blue, mirroring the color gradient of the jersey.
The uniform is packed with hidden details and special elements, including a "City of Brotherly Love" patch on the right sleeve and Love placed under the caps brim. The sweatband features the filigree pattern from the Liberty Bell.
